Nedum Onuoha has backed Shaun Wright-Phillips to come in from the cold and make an impact at QPR this season.

The former Manchester City winger has started just 18 league games during the past two campaigns and has featured only twice since Christmas.

However, Wright-Phillips has returned to pre-season training raring to go and Onuoha, who also played with the 32-year-old at the Etihad Stadium, hopes he can force his way into the side.

"I really hope he can make more of an impact this season," said the defender.

"It was tough for him last year from November onwards really when he didn't really get a look in, which was strange because even before I turned professional all I used to see was Shaun Wright-Phillips dominating football clubs.

"He's come back working hard and playing really well, so if he gets the chance it will be a nice boost for us which we didn't have for most of last season."

Ian Wright told Get West London in May that his son's confidence had been hit after falling out of favour at Loftus Road.

However, Onuoha insists his team-mate has bounced back from last season's woes.

He added: "His confidence was low at some points but he's come through that and is a lot stronger for it now."
