There was a time when, if they needed a new player, Chelsea would simply wave a huge cheque under the nose of the nearest candidate.
But with competition from new moneybags teams like Man City, the transfer window shut and a growing injury list, boss Luiz Felipe Scolari has had to take drastic action.
With Michael Essien, Deco and Ricardo Carvalho all sidelined, and Michael Ballack only just returning from injury, Scolari this week gave a contract to out-of-work 33-year-old journeyman midfielder Mineiro.
Scolari said of his Brazilian compatriot: "He is a player I need because I only have one midfield holding player.
"This week he will not play, but maybe after 10 days. He needs to become adapted, play some games in the reserve team."
