Mark Schwarzer is convinced Fulham will be a bigger club than Middlesbrough, from where the Aussie keeper signed in the close season. The Teesside giants hung on to Schwarzer for 11 years, but the new shot-stopper reckons the pull of west London was too hard to resist.

He said: "Without a doubt, Fulham can be bigger than Boro.

"This season is very important in attempting to achieve that. The squad's more than capable of going on to better things.

"Roy Hodgson was determined to get me. He called me a couple of days after the season ended, and I wanted to have that feeling that someone desperately wants you to come to their club."
