Brentford have two reasons to celebrate after Mark Warburton and Sam Saunders won the Sky Bet League One Player and Manager of the Month awards for December.

Bees boss Warburton achieved instant success with four wins out of four after taking over from Uwe Rosler, while winger Saunders has flourished under his new manager.

He scored three in three games, also chipping in with a couple of assists, to fire Warburton’s side to the summit of the League One table as we enter the second-half of the season.

Brentford chief Warburton said: “It is fantastic for the club.

“We spoke to the players about working to be the best they can be every day, even when they are out of the team. Sam has applied himself well. He had a chance and grabbed it.”

Meanwhile, experienced former manager Alan Curbishley has praised Warburton for the way in which he has handled the transitional period following Rosler’s departure for Wigan.

He said: “Mark Warburton has made an immediate impact on his managerial career by leading Brentford to the top of Sky Bet League One. The Bees are perfectly placed to start the new year.”

Curbishley, who is now a technical director at Fulham, chairs the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel.
