Sam Saunders revealed he had to lie to team-mate Alan McCormack to take Brentford's corners once again.

The popular midfielder returned from his lengthy injury lay-off in the Bees' 1-1 draw with Blackburn.

The Irishman, in the absence of Alan Judge, had been taking Brentford's corners and Saunders, an expert at dead ball situations, wanted them back.

The club have made set pieces more of a priority this season with a dedicated set-piece coach and Saunders is hoping to provide the goals from them.

He told the BBC: “I hope (I can contribute to goals from set pieces). I need to get on the pitch as I can't score them from the bench.

“The first corner came and I said I'd take it to Macca and he growled at me. The next time I lied to him and said the gaffer wanted him at the edge of the box in case of a counter.

“I've had to lie to get him off the corners. You know Alan McCormack when he's in game mode; you can't really say anything to him. I had to give him a little porkie pie.

“We don't care where the goals come from. We're disappointed to be going home with a point and that shows the turnaround we've had.”

Fierce competitor: Alan McCormack

Saunders was left disappointed Brentford came away with just a draw from Ewood Park.

He added: “Being the away side, I think we edged it. We were disappointed with the goal we conceded.

“We had a couple of half chances at 1-0 and the crowd were on their back. We could have gone for the jugular there and killed them off.

“The goal came across and missed everyone so it was disappointing from our point of view. Both teams were trying to win it in the second half but right at the end with Kersch (Konstantin Kerschbaumer) on the penalty spot – I don't know what happened.

“I think on the balance of play, we're disappointed we've come away with a draw.”
