Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s first goal for Chelsea proves the Blues have an abundance of talent waiting in reserve, according to team-mate Kurt Zouma.

Teenager Loftus-Cheek came off the bench to score the killer second goal of a 2-0 FA Cup win over Scunthorpe to put Chelsea in the hat for tonight’s fourth round FA Cup draw.

It was a big moment for the south-London born midfielder, who had little chance to shine in the death throes of the Jose Mourinho era.

Zouma though says that is the nature of being a young player at Chelsea and Loftus Cheek must strive to build on his landmark goal.

“I’m very pleased for Ruben,” he said.

“He works very hard every day in training and he took his chance today. He scored and he has to keep going now because it is not the be all and end all, but we are very happy for him.

“Everybody has the quality to become a regular in the first team, it is just we have a lot of good players.

“So as young guys we have to wait because the big players are older than us, but when we have a chance we have to give everything.”

Zouma, 21, is best qualified to comment having forced himself into contention in the first-team ranks amid competition from club skipper John Terry and England centre-back Gary Cahill.

Despite this he rejects any suggestion he is a role model for other youngsters at Stamford Bridge, saying he too has far from arrived.

He added: “I’m not going to say I’m an example to other young players, but of course when I have a chance I try to do my best and that is a good thing because I’m just 21 and I have to improve every day.”
