QPR supporters didn't direct their frustration at Harry Redknapp after Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United and Hoops defender Richard Dunne thinks they recognised the effort that went into the performance.

Tall Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini and a late James Wilson goal gave United the points in west London as the Red Devils ran out 2-0 winners at Loftus Road to keep the R’s confined to the relegation zone.

Rangers lacked a cutting edge, with Redknapp admitted afterwards that he still wants another striker despite having only just signed Mauro Zarate on loan from West Ham, but there was enough spirit on show from the players to suggest there is hope for survival.

Chairman Tony Fernandes certainly believes in the under-fire boss and has come out in support of Redknapp, matching the faith shown by the fans in west London at the weekend, with Dunne grateful for their help after some ugly scenes a week earlier at Burnley.

He said: “The club have had plenty of emails, letters and phone calls from the real fans who were at the match last week [against Burnley].

“The fans can’t be judged as a whole on one person. It was one fella who is renowned for that sort of thing. It was never a problem.

Keeping the faith: A QPR fan watching the game

“Everywhere we go, whether it’s home or away, the fans are behind us. They’ve been the reason why this place has been so good to us this season.

“They can see we’re trying. We are where we are in the league but it’s not for a lack of trying and I think the fans can see that.”

Saturday's 2-0 home defeat extended Rangers' winless run to five games and leaves the R's a point adrift of safety, however Fernandes insists Redknapp is the right man to lead their survival bid.

He added: “The performance against Manchester United showed the players are behind him and that they have the stomach for the fight.

“We know we need to improve our away form and Harry, his coaching staff and the squad will be doing all they can to turn around our fortunes on our travels.

“It’s very tight in the table and we will do our best to strengthen where we can to give us the best possible chance. The fans have been brilliant all season and all I ask is that they continue to back Harry and the team.”
