Chelsea's emphatic 4-0  victory at Stamford Bridge in the embryonic stages of the League Cup in October 2009 against Bolton was symbolic of the Carlo Ancelotti era, writes Dimitri Kondonis.

Despite only being manager for two seasons, the Italian picked up the Premier League and FA Cup for the West London club, with French winger Florent Malouda leading the way for his high-scoring Blues against the Trotters.

The Blues broke the 100 goal barrier that season – a record only equalled last season by Manchester City – all the while conceding the second fewest goals in the league.

In charge: Chelsea's then manager Carlo Ancelotti

Winning by a four goal margin on no less than eight league occasions throughout the season, the Chelsea forward line, spearheaded by Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, struck fear into many a defender.

Bolton were no different.

Despite Anelka not being selected for the Blues, they romped to a big home victory in the fourth round.

Looking sharp: Florent Malouda

Goals from Malouda, Salomon Kalou, Deco and substitute Drogba settled the tie, in what was a ruthless performance from the eventual Premier League champions.

Their Carling Cup run was ended by Blackburn Rovers on penalties – also of the Premier League at the time – however the Blues managed an FA Cup win to make it a sensational double in Ancelotti's first season with the club.

Such performances have been echoed this season at Stamford Bridge, with new forward Diego Costa spearheading a front line with explosive wingers Eden Hazard and Willian.

And the Blues this season seem to have appeased their notoriously insatiable Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich with their exhilarating style of play.

Chelsea fans hoping for a repeat of their 2009 encounter when the two teams meet again tonight.

However, Bolton fans will be fearing the worst – especially following their poor start to the season.
