Over half of the Premier League’s new foreign imports have moved to lower ranked clubs than their previous sides.

A total 66 players have moved to the Premier League from abroad during this transfer window, with 58 of those coming from top flight European clubs.

As many as 36 of those 58 players, 60 per cent, have moved to English clubs with a lower Euro Club Index (ECI) score than that of their previous sides.

The ECI is calculated using historical results in domestic and continental competitions to represent a club’s relative playing strength.

However, many of the big drops in terms of club stature were experienced by those on the fringes of the side that they left.

The players to drop the most in terms of ECI score are those to have left Barcelona.

Adama Traore (to Aston Villa), Alex Song (to West Ham), Ibrahim Afellay (to Stoke) and Gerard Deulofeu (to Everton) all left the Champions League winners and team with the highest ECI score this summer.

Angelo Ogbonna’s move to West Ham from Juventus saw the next largest drop followed by Yohan Cabaye’s move from PSG to Crystal Palace.

Jose Holebas’ move from Roma to Watford is the next largest drop in terms of ECI score followed by Toby Alderweireld (Atletico Madrid to Tottenham), Miguel Britos (Napoli to Watford) and Pedro (Barcelona to Chelsea).
