Edgar Davids is being targeted by some referees according to Barnet coach Ulrich Landvreugd, writes Josh Ilan.

The former Holland captain received his second red card in eight games in Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Dartford, for picking up two bookable offences.

Landvreugd felt it was a harsh decision and is concerned at the rate at which officials are dishing out cards towards the midfielder.

“To be fair, I didn’t see the first yellow,” he said. “The second yellow is a little bit harsh, and there are accidents like that in the game.

“I can’t speak for the referees. I don’t think it was hard on him today but you can see some referees are looking for him.”

With Edgar Davids being sidelined for the next two games, one game for a red card and the other for picking up his fifth yellow of the season, it may open up an opportunity for fellow central midfielder Roberto Casabella in the Bees squad.

The Spaniard has struggled to break into the team since recovering from injury, but this weekend’s visit of Grimsby in the FA Trophy second round could provide his chance.

“We have a big team and a lot of players to choose from,” Landvreugd added.

“Ahmed Abdulla and Curtis Weston are playing well, Luisma Villa also. We have to make choices.

“We can only have five players on the bench instead of seven, like we had last year. Mostly we have to choose one defender, midfielder, winger and striker.”
