One cross from Matt Phillips has rescued the QPR winger’s season - or so he hopes.

The superb out swinger met by the head of Leroy Fer for Hoops’s first goal at Sunderland last week reminded everybody why Rs paid £4million for the 23-year-old in 2013.

Mostly sidelined under former boss Harry Redknapp, Phillips has been given a new lease of life under new coach Chris Ramsey, who has set aside time perfecting the art of the centre with the former Blackpool player.

“Chris has spent time with me on things I need to work on, and hopefully I’ll see the benefit,” added Phillips. “He’s very hands on, and we’ve practised three or our different types and angles and weight of cross and people getting on the end of it.

Up for it: Phillips (R) challenges Southampton's Matt Targett

“It feels good, and you feel like you have a worth within the side and that breeds confidence, especially as I’m a confidence player, and when you haven’t got it, you do need those assists and goals.”

The winger has been through the mill in his time at Loftus Road. He arrived from the Seasiders with a broken arm that got worse after a win at Yeovil in September, 2013.

In February, he suffered serious ankle ligament damage that ruled him out for the rest of the season and consigned him to the training ground gym in summer while his team-mates were slapping on the sun cream oil.

Even then, Phillips admits he wasn’t 100 per cent in August, but is chaffing at the bit to get another go at Hull tomorrow.

He has never played at the KC Stadium, but if he does, it will be only his 37th appearance either as starter or sub for Rs.

“At the beginning of the season I wasn’t quite ready to play, and it was tough,” he added. “But always knew in the back of my head one day I would get the chance to play again. I’m over my injuries and I’ve got a bit of confidence now.”

This is the second time Phillips has been involved in a relegation scrap.

Ambition: Phiilips in action for Scotland (R) against the USA in 2012

The first with Blackpool in 2011 ended in disappointment; the second has the Scotland international insisting Rangers will survive.

“There were a lot less known players at Blackpool, and it was a different scenario,” he explained. “Up until Christmas back then we were doing well, and then we let it slip. The surprise element was gone.

“This time everyone knows QPR well and its players. Sooner or later we will pick up three or four wins, because that’s the ability we’ve got here.”

Belief: Chris Ramsey (R)

Phillips also nurtures hopes of adding to the two Scotland caps he won in 2012 and 2013, but not before he commands a regular spot on the Rangers wing.

He explained: “I spoke to (Scotland boss) Gordon Strachan at the beginning of the season, and a couple of months before Christmas he phoned as well.

“He said he was keeping his eye on me, and was waiting for me to get in the side, but couldn’t be picking me while I wasn’t, so it’s now it’s a question of being patient, and hopefully I’ll get back in the squad.”
