QPR may have to improve any wage offer to out-of-contract Damien McCrory or forget about signing the Burton Albion defender.

The versatile left-sided player is a on the Rangers wish list of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as the Hoops gaffer rebuilds, but Albion boss Nigel Clough insists his player is happy at the Pirelli Stadium.

Talking about both McCrory and striker Lucas Akins, Clough reckons the pair will most certainly play in the Championship next season - but with newly promoted Burton, despite their limited budget.

"They've had good seasons and we feel as though they'll be good assets in the Championship," said Clough. "Nothing is agreed with them yet but we've had preliminary talks and offers.

"The good thing is, we want them to stay and both players want to stay, which is a good starting point.

"We haven't set a deadline yet but we need to sit down in earnest with them. We've bandied a few figures around and we're not too far away but I don't think we, or they, will want it to drag on too long."

McCrory saw League Two promotion under Hasselbaink in 2014-15, and won international caps for his country at under-18 and under-19 levels.

His five goals in 36 appearances under Hasselbaink in the Burton League Two title campaign added an extra incentive to reunite him with left midfielder Nasser El-Khayati who joined Rs in February for £350,000.
