QPR goalkeeper Rob Green wanted to continue playing after taking a Joey Barton knee to the head in Rangers' 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

The goalkeeper was forced off after the accidental collision and needed two stitches by his right eye but he insisted he was fine after the game.

“I wanted to carry on. People have been concussed before and said they have wanted to carry on. But it was the winning substitution I think!” he said.

“It's okay, I just had a few stitches. I was knocked out briefly. It wasn't a clean punch on the nose!

“The blow came from the side and there was just a bit of momentary blackness, it was all right.

“I could hear Clint Hill speaking to me, but I couldn't respond for a few seconds. I felt fine to carry on but the protocol these days means they're not going to listen to me.”

Green is not one for backing down and believes he has a chance to play against Leicester on Sunday in the final game of the season.

Concussion rules dictate that the goalkeeper needs to be monitored for a minimum six days before being allowed to return to action.

And Green, who doesn't think it would spell the end of his season, would not want it to end being escorted off the pitch.

He said: “I have had worse ways (to end a season)! These things happen in football, not everything is a fairytale.

“The season ended as a disappointment but we showed against Newcastle what we are capable of when we stick to our strengths and basics. In that respect, it's a bit frustrating in the context of the season.”
