QPR could pave the way for Ian Holloway to return to the club that sacked him nine years ago.

Chris Ramsey was axed on Wednesday night following a string of indifferent results, and within hours the club had more than 30 applications.

However, there is no move to appoint Tim Sherwood, ousted by Aston Villa last week, and in the frame for the Rs job in February.

Rangers insist they intend to stick to the new order plan of a streamlined budget that demands the next man in has to work with slender means - and with the squad he inherits.

Hat-trick - but not this time: QPR director of football Les Ferdinand, flanked by Chris Ramsey (L) and Tim Sherwood

Chairman Tony Fernandes ruled out Sherwood 10 months ago because the former Spurs boss wanted hefty resources to keep Hoops in the Premier League.
As Fernandes said at the time: “it would have been daft not to speak to Tim, but we want to go in a different direction now.’

That means someone steeped in the rigours of Championship football allied to cutting costs.

Holloway was Hoops boss from 2001-2006, in which time he hauled a cash-strapped Rs out of League One mire and back to the Championship.

He was fired before he could walk when Leicester showed interest in the former Rangers player, and is available as is a lengthy list including Chris Powell, Alan Irvine, Nigel Pearson, Alex McLeish, Paul Lambert and Shepherd’s Bush born Stuart Pearce - all with second tier experience on their CV.

The club will look to appoint someone as soon as possible, so he has time to work with his new charges over the two-week international break that follows Saturday's game at home to Preston.

Part-time coach Neil Warnock steps up to the plate for the clash with North End. But another former Rs boss has made it plain he doesn’t want the job on a permanent basis.

Not least because the 66-year-old lives in Cornwall and a hands-on daily operation demands he uproots his family back to London.
