Tjaronn Chery is happy to take a longer route to the top of British football than his friend Memphis Depay.

QPR's Dutch new-boy is delighted fellow countryman Depay has made a splash in his early days at Manchester United, but after scoring his first two goals for the hoops in Saturday's 4-2 win over Rotherham, Chery revealed he had made a conscious decision to make his bow in English football at Championship level.

Less of a household name than Memphis, Chery decided not to risk wiling away time in the dugout of a Premiership club, preferring to let his boots make his case one level lower in W12.

"I know Memphis and we have spoken this season," he said. "It is nice when players come from Holland and do well.

"For me the most important thing about coming to QPR is you have to play. If you go to the Premier League maybe you end up sitting on the bench you don't know.

"You have to begin somewhere when you are a football player and if you play well then maybe you go to the Premier League or you stay here and go to the Premier League with QPR.

"I knew I would play a lot of games and also win a lot of games with QPR."

Boss Chris Ramsey was happy to see Chery break his scoring duck, but suggested to those who were impressed with the diminutive striker they had seen nothing yet.

"He has got more to offer," he said.

"To be honest with you he hasn't really played as well as we know he can yet. He is key to what we are going to do and he is starting to get into the to and fro of playing in the Championship which is a tough league.

"He took the goals fantastically well, I think the thing he finds challenging is the defensive side of things. We don't have the luxury of players not having to defend, so he'll probably need some ice for his ears tonight."
