HARRY Redknapp's first game in charge ended with a hard-fought goalless draw at the Stadium of Light.

Jamie Mackie had QPR's best chance before the break, while Carlos Cuellar was denied by substitute Rob Green after the interval as honours ended even.

The visitors started brightly on a grim night on Wearside, with Simon Mignolet diving low to his left to turn Djibril Cisse's effort around the post.

The Sunderland keeper came to his side's rescue again just before the break when he blocked Mackie's shot, while Adel Taarabt was unable to find a way past a host of bodies with the follow-up.

At the other end, Julio Cesar tipped Craig Gardner's header over the bar, while the Brazilian produced a great save to deny Steven Fletcher on the stroke of half-time.

Esteban Granero headed straight at Mignolet at the start of the second period and Stephane Mbia fired a long-ranger just wide.

However, Sunderland almost broke the deadlock through Cuellar, only for Green – a half-time replacement for the injured Cesar – to somehow keep it out.

Sub Shaun Wright-Phillips could've snatched it at the death, but Mignolet got down to save his tame effort as both sides had to settle for a point.

QPR: Cesar (Green 46), Bosingwa, Nelsen, Hill, Traore, Diakite (Park 65), Mbia, Granero, Mackie, Taarabt (Wright-Phillips 77), Cisse.

Subs (not used): Ferdinand, Da Silva, Derry, Hoilett.
