Matt Ingram knows he faces a battle to win the QPR number one shirt but, if he does not, he will be supporting Alex Smithies the whole way.

The former Wycombe goalkeeper impressed at the end of last season and has been a consistent performer in pre-season as well.

And it gives Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink a headache as to which player he opts to put between the sticks.

Ingram said: “Alex is a great goalie. We’re trying to push each other and be the best we can be.

“Then it’s down to the gaffer, whoever he picks – we’ll back each other up. I’ve got no idea what the gaffer thinks. Alex and I are doing our best.”

Ingram has been impressed with the squad Hasselbaink has put together during the off-season and feels the players are ready for the action to begin. He added: “We’ve got a great squad. The gaffer has brought in a few new ideas.

“We’re starting to nail his ideas down now and then we’ll be ready to go. He’s brought a lot of players in as well and his tactics. We’re looking forward to the season and we’re sure he is too.”

More please: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Rangers face Leeds on August 7 in their Championship opener and know they will face a fight to try and win promotion back to the Premier League.

Newcastle are the favourites to make an instant return to the top flight, but Ingram believes that if QPR perform as they can, then they should be challenging as well.

He said: “There are big teams there such as Newcastle and they have Moussa Sissoko, who was the best player in the Euro 2016 final.

“The key is going to be doing what we do.

“If we do it well, teams won’t be able to handle us. The only things missing against Wycombe and Northampton (two recent friendly draws) were probably goals – hopefully we’re saving them for the season.”
