QPR number one Alex Smithies has said that Matt Ingram is up with the best goalkeepers of his age, and is set for the very top.

The former Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper is enjoying an excellent spell on loan with Northampton Town, and has attracted rave reviews for his displays since arriving at Sixfields.

Speaking to GetWestLondon, Smithies said that a spell in League One is just what Ingram needed.

Matt Ingram in action for QPR

He said: "I speak to Matt regularly and I know a couple of the players at Northampton and it sounds like he's been doing well. He's a very steady goalkeeper and as far as young goalkeepers go there's not many with his ability at his age. I think he'll be a top, top goalkeeper.

"What he needed was games. Obviously he managed to get the games at Wycombe fairly young and he's had a bit of a spell without playing too many games so I think this will do him the world of good."

The 27-year-old also praised up-and-coming goalkeeper Joe Lumley, who he also thinks is set for a bright career.

He said: "We're generally strong in that department at QPR. Joe who has been involved with the first team squad since Matt went out on loan, he's another one for the future. He's a really bright lad who wants to improve and wants to learn, and he has a fantastic attitude"
