Alex Smithies is going to be as successful as the man he replaced – according to QPR’s captain.

Nedum Onuoha is in no doubt the £1m summer signing from Huddersfield has what it takes to not only be a fixture for Rs, but pave the way to an England future just like Rob Green.

The 36-year-old has been told he is not going to play except in an emergency so the club avoid 30-game clause that triggers a new deal.

But Smithies has seized his long-awaited chance and was only beaten by a three-touch wicked deflection by Wolves on Saturday, with praise before that for a clean sheet in the win over Rotherham.

In fact, two great saves inside a minute on against Wolves earned Hoops a 1-1 draw.

Time up: Rob Green

The 25-year-old has been restricted to only six appearances so far, but Onuoha would like to remind everyone Smithies has plenty of Championship pedigree with Huddersfield.

“Alex has got more experience than people think, but not as much as Rob, because Rob’s a hundred years old, isn’t he?” Onuoha joked.

“Alex has played a lot of games in this division and does the fundamentals really, really well.

“When you have someone like that it’s very easy to play with them. He can do everything Rob’s done in his career.”

Rangers are at Nottingham Forest this evening in a bid to break a City Ground hoodoo of no wins in 28 attempts dating back to 1948.
