Chris Ramsey insists the only way forward is for QPR to have a long-term plan - whether it gets applied in the Premier League or the Championship.

The club is staring into the abyss of a second demotion in three seasons. In fact, they might play out of their skins at Manchester City on Sunday, win 6-0, and still be down already if results go against them Saturday.

Ramsey spoke of ‘we’ to the media several times on Friday as he discussed the future. It may have been a subliminal slip that he is to keep his job permanently.

With eight of the current squad out of contract and three loanees headed back to parent clubs, the coach admits there is a new chapter waiting to be written in the club’s history.

“I couldn’t say who I’m going to take on and who I’m not going to take on, because I don’t know what the purse strings are, and I don’t know the long-term plans depending on what division we are,” Ramsey added.

“I know we’re formulating those plans, and to be honest with you I think the owners are very positive about what’s going to happen next season.

“But the club has been learned there is a necessity to make a long-term plan and I would be well suited to that, and I think it would be good for anyone who came in to build a club like Queens Park Rangers, with a long history; good catchment area; the ability to attract the right players.”

Assuming Hoops are still in it, a side down to ‘bare bones’ needs all the help it can get at The Etihad. Ramsey insists a City team with little play for will still be tough despite a decent 2-2 draw against the former champions in November (see gallery).

He explained: “I think when you have players of that quality they find a way to not be dominated physically, that’s why they have been at the top that long.

“We would try to do anything that we could, you know. If I felt I had to give the players baseball bats to go out there, I might have to do that on Sunday, if that’s going to be the difference,” he joked.

“Technically, they are fantastic. And I don’t think they are going to allow themselves to be dominated physically. When they have that quality, they do find a way to overcome it.

“The fact is they have come back to a bit of form as well.”
