Les Ferdinand revealed he has already being doing the necessary leg-work to avoid the mess QPR found themselves in last summer.

Hoops had been scheduled to play a cluster of games based in Italy against top foreign opposition that included Shakhtar Donetsk, AS Monaco, and Saudia Arabia outfit Al Ittihad.

Instead, they got the Monaco outing and a second against a sub-standard side knocked together at the last minute - and returned all the poorer, according to then coach Chris Ramsey.

The club’s director of football believes it was a lesson hard learned.

“Last year we were let down by the promoters,” Ferdinand told a recent fans forum.

“You want to make sure you’re pre-season is good, and it was a shambles last year.

“We’ve already been out and done some reccys overseas. We have to make sure we 10 days or so and we have to make sure we have the right games for that venue.”

Head coach Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink echoed how vital the period from return to August 6 and first Championship game, assuming Hoops have not performed the equivalent of water to wine and end up in the Premier League that starts a week later.

Hasselbaink said: “That part of the year is the foundation; it’s team bonding and building a special team, and that’s why we are starting now to prepare now.”
