It will take more than a League Cup win over Rochdale tomorrow for QPR to regain momentum, according to skipper Nedum Onuoha.

Back to back league defeats to Barnsley and Preston North End have temporarily at least derailed Rangers’ promising start to the season, so Onuoha could be forgiven for seeing the knockout clash with the League One outfit as the way to get their mojo back.

However, the former Manchester City man believes Rangers will ultimately be judged on their league form so need a win at Wigan next Saturday in addition to any cup success to be considered back on track before the international break kicks in.

“Whether we can use the Rochdale game as a way to gain momentum I’m not sure, perhaps you can, but the league is still the league,” he said.

“We could win on Tuesday, lose on Saturday and someone will still say you have lost three games in a row.

“We want to win on Tuesday and Saturday, then I think it is the international break. You want to go into that in a strong position and then start working on things you have not really been able to because you have been playing three games a week for the past three weeks.”

Rangers only have to cast their minds back to this time last year when League Two Carlisle eliminated them at the same stage to know the danger Dale pose.

That was the eighth time in 11 season Onuoha and co have gone out to lower league opposition so he is rightly wary of the underdogs.

“They are not coming here to lose, they are coming to try and win and there is no pressure on them,” added Onuoha.

“So it is always going to be a difficult fixture.”
