Conor Washington is not so much replacing Charlie Austin – but he does have to score QPR goals.

The difference will seem to fans as near as makes no difference.

But Nedum Onuoha believes the £2 million signing from Peterborough can forget about treading in the shadow of the departed Austin to Southampton, but focus on the reason he was signed in the first place.

Washington was a second-half sub in the 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday as he was in a debut against Wolves on Saturday.

The 26-year-old, who mirrors Austin because of their lowly non-league background, had a first touch that was sublime; his second and last should have seen Tjaronn Chery notching the winner.

Instead, the Dutch forward thrashed a post and a second win for boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink went begging.

It bodes well for the future, although captain Onuoha supposed a one-man goal machine is anything but ideal.

He said: “Conor’s first very touch was to take a ball out of the sky and killing it, and he nearly had an assist. He can hopefully score a lot of goals.

“As regards Charlie, in football you have the problem of trying to mimic people. But in this club we have more who can add to what the position offers.

“The job of the number nine is to score goals, and whether it’s Charlie Austin, Jamie Mackie, Conor Washington or Sebastian Polter – that’s what they have to do.

“It’s not so much about trying to fill Charlie’s shoes, it’s trying to fill the expectation of what you should do.”

Rangers are without a game this weekend, having exited the FA Cup to Forest at the beginning of the month.
