Forget the romance of the FA Cup – QPR once again did not get as far as a flirt.

They won't be troubling the success stories in the video above, that's for sure.

Their dismal recent record in the famous old trophy continued as a 2-0 lead for Blackburn via a Joel Lynch own goal and a second for Liam Feeney proved too big an obstacle to overturn, despite Jake Bidwell’s first goal for the club from the spot.

And what might have been a memorable day for teenage debutant Ebere Eze ended after just 18 minutes when he was unable to run off the effects of an early kick.

Elliott Bennett then escaped down the left to cross to the far post and though Matt Ingram parried the close-range header the ball hit Joel Lynch and bobbled in.

Head up: Jake Bidwell clears

The hosts mustered little in response in a dire first half, Lynch’s 35-yarder which fizzed narrowly wide their only effort of note.

Blackburn doubled the lead 13 minutes after the break when Sam Gallagher broke away down the right and though again Ingram palmed out the initial shot for unmarked Liam Feeney to roll the ball into an empty net.

Rangers responded immediately when substitute Olamide Shodipo was pushed over by Hope Akpan and Jake Bidwell rifled home the spot-kick, but substitute Jordan Cousins missed their only real chance to force a replay when he fired wide late on.

What conclusions can we draw from this latest FA cup disappointment?

Rangers did not lack effort, but they created precious little against their fellow Championship strugglers. This and the way they were undone out wide for the two goals means they can have few complaints about the result.

Battle: Massimo Luongo (R)

Five changes

Making five changes after back-to-back wins always looked a gamble and the hosts lacked the cohesion they had shown in parts in victory over Ipswich on Monday. Did the selection also reflect a disinterest in England’s premier cup competition?

Crumb of consolation

Despite only lasting 18 minutes, teenager Eze was one of the few bright spots for Rangers. He showed some good early touches and a bit of swagger. The former Millwall youngster certainly wasn’t overawed and looks one shrewd investment.
