Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink hopes QPR fans realise this is only chapter one in the side's development.

Rangers lost a close game 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, but the head coach suggested Rs are still at the 'jogging' stage as they build towards a sprint.

Rangers signed seven new faces in the summer - five players who featured in this one got their first taste of Championship football earlier in the campaign.

In contrast, the hosts were much the same team that fell at the final hurdle of a play-off final at Wembley to Hull City.

The Rs gaffer also used the word 'cute' as a missing ingredient from QPR claiming a point.

The Rs head coach might have also suggested smarter, clinical, more cutting edge or any of a number of terms that summed up a disappointing day in a 1-0 defeat.

The last time they tasted defeat was also in Yorkshire a month ago at Huddersfield, and there was a time in this game when they might have fared better with more precision in front of goal.

Tjaronn Chery had a chance cleared off the line right at the death, and Nedum Onuoha brought a terrific save out of young keeper Cameron Norman - but this QPR side is a work in progress.

Hasselbaink said: "We should have been more cute - and we must get better at that.

"But I'm happy with the performance and the boys did the well."

Close! Nedum Onuoha fires goalwards

"We are trying to get toward the top of the table (where Sheff Wed are) - and yes there is a difference.

"They have the squad they had last year. If you look at the Sheffield players that play today - all but one of them were in the play-of final and that gives you continuity.

"Today was a big test - and we did well. That's our aim to be up there. First we have to walk, then run and then sprint - and at the moment we are at the jogging stage."
