NEIL Warnock has played down reports that Heidar Helguson is set to be handed an improved contract at Loftus Road.

The QPR striker has scored six goals already this year but only signed fresh terms in the summer.

Helguson has an option to extend his stay in W12 for another year if he features in 50 per cent of their games this season.

Warnock said: “I fought hard with Flavio [Briatore] in the summer to give him a new contract. I see him as our Kevin Davies, but the previous owners wanted to release him because of his age.

“Exactly why I wanted him has come to the fore, because we've had a few injuries and a few have suffered a loss of form.

“It's easier for him to play in the Premier League than the Championship because there's a week between games and the preparation's better. He's one of the best headers in the division if you give him opportunities.

“He's 34 and we've already got him tied down, so I can't see me giving him a six-year contract!"
