Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will now find out about the character of his QPR players after their humiliating 6-0 home defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday night.

The loss was QPR's worst at home in the league in their 96 years as a Football League club and they were outclassed by a Magpies side who could finish the season with a Championship record haul of points.

And Hasselbaink believes he will find out more about his squad than he would have done in his 10 months in charge at Loftus Road.

“I haven't lost by six as a manager (before). I've lost 4-0 once and as a player, I don't think I've lost 6-0,” he said.

“It's one of those things. You have to be brave and strong. You have to move on. Now is the important time. Now we will see if we can get them back.”

The QPR squad had a frank discussion in the dressing room after the game and Hasselbaink will be addressing what went wrong ahead of their trip to Huddersfield on Friday.

Hasselbaink revealed: “Some honesty has been said. We have to be honest with each other. You have to be truthful.

“The main thing is we are together and want to put it right. It's happened. It hurts as nobody wants to lose 6-0 but I don't want to lose 1-0.

“There are things in the game I'm not happy with and that shouldn't happen. We need to look at those things.

“It was always going to be difficult but we just hoped it was going to be a lot tighter than it came out.”

QPR fans streamed out of Loftus Road from half-time onwards and Hasselbaink apologised to them after the game and urged the supporters to stick with the squad.

He added: “We are very sorry for the supporters. We haven't shown our real self but it hurts as well. It really hurts my boys.

“We need the help from the supporters to lift that. We lose together, we win together.

“We've lost badly against Newcastle but we lost badly together. We are going to move on together and that's the only way forward.”
