It’s not gone according to plan for Mauricio Isla, says his QPR manager.

The Chile international was brought in on loan from Juventus because of his performances as a wing-back last season in Serie A.

The fly in everyone’s ointment is the 3-5-2 formation that would have suited Isla best has been ditched.

After three defeats on the trot, Rangers finally got off the mark with a win over Sunderland using a flat 4-4-2 system that stymied Isla’s hopes of getting forward. As a result, we are yet to see the best of his new recruit, reckons the boss.

Harry Redknapp said: “It’s been a problem for Isla in so much as he’s a wing back when he was at Juventus.

“I brought him into play in the same position as well. We had a couple of results that didn’t go our way early on, so we went to a four and he’s not been the same player as we were in a five.”

No regrets: Danny Simpson

However, the manager has no regrets selling Danny Simpson to Leicester, who would have been the obvious other choice as right-back.

Harry added: “Danny’s not playing at Leicester is he? But he’s a good lad and he done a good job here playing right-back in a four.”

The other Chilean with Rangers is also tipped to come good, although striker Eduardo Vargas is still something of a ‘gamble’.

Eduardo Vargas

Redknapp explained: “We were in a little situation where we weren’t overloaded with front men and had to take some gambles.

“I think Vargas is OK, and I think he will do well.”
