Did either side deserve to win? No.

Matt Phillips squandered a heaven-sent chance to claim all three points in the second half, but blasted over, and apart from howls from Owls for a penalty against Lucas Joao in the second half, Barry Bannan created space and did exactly the same thing as Phillips.

Earlier, the first-half sandwich was better for the bread.

The first bit was lively; the filling was boring, and the end was quite tasty.

Wednesday never really threatened, but near openings never quite ran for them and an excellent 1,721 following for a Tuesday night.

Pretty solid defending staunched Rangers attacks for the most part, but a fizzer from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas proved too hit for Kieran Westwood.

In the thick of it: Clint Hill

The Owls keeper was grateful to see rebound hit Tjaronn Chery's legs and go wide - even if the Rs midfielder was deemed offside.

Then right at the end last man Clint Hill was caught napping; made a desperate tackle to stop Modou Sougou, and succeeded legally according to ref Andy Haines.

But the Wednesday player lay flat out for some minutes before being stretchered off.

Close: Tjaronn Chery

That man Hill was again involved when he tackled sub Joao from behind just shy of the hour. There were Yorkshire shouts for a penalty, but nothing doing again said the man who mattered.

Boos rang out when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was subbed by Leroy Fer, and to compound matters, it was immediately folllowed by the miss from Phillips on 71 minutes when he was through but somehow blazed his shot a clear 10 yards over the bar.

Chery's clip at the back post was somehow kept out by Liam Palmer on the line - and there was little else to worry the two keepers.
