AFC Wimbledon bowed out of the FA Cup with their heads held high after pushing European giants Liverpool all the way at Kingsmeadow last night.

Two-goal Steven Gerrard showed the Reds what they will be missing next season following the Anfield legend’s revelation last week that he is departing in the summer.

Gerrard opened the scoring with a darting header before Adebayo Akinfenwa restored parity and the Liverpool midfielder got his second to settle the tie.

Dons boss Neal Ardley said: "I've told the players they have done the club proud but also they should kick themselves because we are in the business of winning and not being good losers.”

Liverpool’s reward for beating Wimbledon is a fourth-round home tie with Bolton Wanderers, with manager Brendan Rodgers admitting the Dons made life difficult for his Premier League side.

Rodgers added: “It was a very tough game. Congratulations to AFC Wimbledon - they made it very difficult. I've got to give a lot of testament to my players - they showed a lot of character.”

AFC Wimbledon return to League Two action this weekend with a trip to Hertfordshire to take on Graham Westley’s Stevenage.
