Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup Final

Hanwell Town 0 Harrow Borough 1

Skipper Marc-Charles Smith netted a last-gasp winner from the penalty spot as Harrow Borough lifted the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup for the third time on Saturday.

Harrow, winners in 1983 and 1993, took on first time finalists Hanwell Town for the trophy at Hampton & Richmond Borough FC, and an evenly contested match was settled by a Charles-Smith in added time at the end 90 minutes.

Michael Buckley cleared the Harrow cross bar with a the game's first effort, before Martin Herdmann, who had a very good game in the Hanwell goal, saved a long shot from Ryan Hope which took a deflection from Charles-Smith en route.

Ian Bywater then flicked on to present Connor Duffy with a good chance for Hanwell, which he skied over, before a strong, well directed Lewis Driver header from a Charles-Smith’s cross was acrobatically tipped away by Herdmann.

Josh Webb hit a 30 yard free kick just wide and Billy Adcock fired across the Harrow goalmouth, before Harrow keeper Nick Jupp advanced to foil Bill Healey and then Tom Inch, who was put in by Healey's neat footwork.

Michael Bryan headed George McCluskey’s cross narrowly wide for Harrow before crossing for Charles-Smith to head wide, before McCluskey drew a great save from Herdman as Boro finished the half on top.

After the break, Charles-Smith cut in from the left and squared to Driver, who shot over, while at the other end, Calum Duffy’s cross shot was well taken by Jupp, who then saved well from Billy Adcock.

A shot on the turn by Tom Duffy was then saved by Jupp, who also did well to beat the Hanwell forwards to a short back pass from Spencer McCall, while Hanwell sub Lewis Ochoa shot narrowly wide with a long range effort, and Charles-Smith and Driver both went close for Harrow.

Four minutes of added time was then indicated and extra time looked inevitable, but half way through the additional time, Driver released McCluskey, who burst into the Hanwell penalty box only to be caught in the face by a high kick by Oliver Duffy. Herdman guessed wrong and Charles-Smith duly converted the spot kick to take the trophy to Earlsmead.
