Nemanja Matic’s first-half goal was enough to see off Sporting Lisbon and send Chelsea to the top of Champions League Group G.

The towering Serbian midfielder arched a header over the excellent Rui Patricio, who made six saves on the night, to give the Blues the points.

Jose Mourinho was frustrated by his compatriots keeping on the night and revealed an expletive-laden discussion with the shot-stopper who threatened to ruin his homecoming.

He said: “I'm not going to repeat the words (I said to Patricio) because they'd be censored.

“It was something to do with spoiling the evening, spoiling the night.

“(Mohamed) Salah came in and there were great saves from Patricio. Games like this can end up 4-0 or 5-0, but it ended up 1-0 and a well managed goal."
