Chelsea failed to sparkle on bonfire night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Maribor in the Champions League.

The Blues paid the penalty - literally - for a lacklustre performance in Slovenia on Wednesday night.

Eden Hazard had a chance to win it from the spot for Jose Mourinho's team from 12 yards with six minutes left.

But his effort summed up Chelsea's evening as his effort from 12 yards was saved by the legs of Maribor keeper Jasmin Hananovic.

The Blues went behind five minutes after the break through Agim Ibraim but Nemanja Matic pulled the visitors level with quarter of an hour remaining.

Diego Costa had a goal ruled out for offside as the Blues failed to find the win that would have guaranteed progress from Group G.

Mourinho made it known what he thought about the Blues' first half performance by replacing Willian and Andre Schurrle at the break.

He said: "In the first half we didn't play well.

"In the second half and after their goal we played very well and normally we should win the game.

"But when you don't play well for 19 minutes, you risk and in the last 30 minutes when we played really and intense and creative with a big desire to win, we had lots of chances to do it, their goalkeeper was magnificent."
