Charlie Horlock says getting over mistakes is easier at Harrow Borough because he has an understanding boss, writes James Keith

The on-loan Wycombe Wanderers goalkeeper gifted AFC Hornchurch their second goal in a 3-0 win on Tuesday with a poor clearance.

George Purcell took full advantage to smash in from distance but the Chairboys youngster won’t dwelling on his error if Dave Anderson, an ex-keeper himself, has anything to with it.

Horlock says: “Dave has played at a good level and he is very understanding of mistakes you make, what situations you get in and how to manage it, having been a goalkeeper himself, so I learn a lot off of him.”

Horlock might have let in three in midweek but he kept a clean sheet on Saturday in the 2-0 victory over Leiston and pulled off a great double save to help Harrow to their fourth win of the campaign.

He will remain at Earlsmead for the remainder of the season and admits he needed to go out and get games rather than sit on the bench at Wycombe.

He added: “Last year I only got ten games on loan at Hendon and I’m not going to improve in training. The only way to get better is to play games and I want to push on to help out the first team.”

Games are certainly what he is getting under Anderson and Horlock is quickly learning that life in the Ryman Premier is unpredictable.

But he is now preparing for another taste of FA Cup action on Saturday at VCD Athletic before, replay permitting, Borough host Bognor Regis Town in the league on Tuesday night.

He explained: “Anyone can beat anyone in this league. But this exactly what I need, men’s football.

“It is different to youth team football and reserve friendlies, getting professional football where points are on the line will improve me.

“That’s what I am here for as Matt Ingram [Wycombe’s first-choice shot-stopper] is doing fantastic I can’t fault him at that. I’m just looking to improve myself and see where it goes.”

Boss Anderson this week added Northern Ireland international Michael Bryan to his squad.

Harrow’s tenants, Hendon, who were last night (Wednesday) due to face Leatherhead in the league had a 3-3 draw with Tonbridge Angels at the weekend.

They are in FA Cup action on Saturday when they host Leiston before, replay permitting, heading to AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday night.

Denis Nortey got on the scoresheet for Rayners Lane as they held Henley Town to a 1-1 stalemate in Hellenic League Division One East at the weekend but exited the Middlesex Premier Cup on Tuesday night after a 1-0 defeat to Bedfont & Feltham. They travel to Woodley Town in the league on Saturday.

Ian Bates’ Wembley knocked Harefield out of the Challenge Trophy with a 4-2 win on Tuesday night and had a 3-2 win over Hadley in the Spartan South Midlands Premier on Saturday. They travel to Hertford Town on Saturday before hosting Hoddesdon Town on Tuesday.
