The Bamford brothers may have thought a Sunday stroll with Bedfont Sunday would be a quiet change from their recent controversial transfer from Ashford to Chertsey.

And it was Gavin Bamford who this time took the spotlight, the midfielder taking over as a sub keeper and saving two penalties in a shoot-out.

To recap, the pair raised a few eyebrows last month when they dropped two divisions to leave Ryman Premier side Ashford Town (Middx) for cash-rich Combined Counties Premier side Chertsey Town.

But while Gavin's transfer was all above board, Chertsey are now being investigated by the Surrey County FA for an illegal approach for Stuart.

The pair sat on the bench on Sunday as Bedfont, managed by a third brother, Adam Bamford, had six drop-outs for their Middlesex County Sunday Premier Cup tie with Enfield Rangers Old Boys.

Bedfont went two goals down before coming to life, and pulled one back when Mark Scotchford was on target both times with a twice-taken penalty.

Scotchford then crossed for Neville Barrett to equalise for Bedfont, but then he hero turned villain when he missed another penalty to take it to extra-time.

Enter the Bamford brothers to freshen things up, but it was Mark Smith who put Bedfont in front with a free-kick from 30 yards out with five minutes left.

However, Enfield drew level in the last minute, and so it went to spot-kicks.

Enfield netted with their first three, with Smith scoring Bedfont's first, Vinny Hodge bagging their second at the second attempt after his missed effort was re-taken, and Barrett missed their third.

But the drama was only just beginning. Bedfont keeper Kabina Anaman, just back after a year out, was unable to continue after his knee swelled up.

So Gavin Bamford took the gloves and promptly save the next kick before jogging a few yards to smash home his penalty.

Enfield netted their next two, as did Scotchford and Mani Barrerio for Bedfont, before Bamford's second save put them on the brink.

All that was left was for Tosie Fasinro to belt home the winning penalty, making it 6-5 to Bedfont. [25a0] SATURDAY side Bedfont Sports fielded three new signings in their Middlesex County Premier clash with Newham Borough, but it wasn't enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat.

Mark Smith and Mark Scotchford returned to Bedfont colours following spells with Egham and Hanworth Villa, while former Bedfont Eagles youth player Leeyon Phelan, who has played in the Football League with Wycombe Wanderers, all turned out.

Phelan gave Bedfont the lead after having an earlier effort ruled out for offside, but Newham came back with a goal either side of the break to snatch victory.
