Paul Williams believes his stint as Brentford's assistant head coach to Lee Carsley has helped him in his role at Nottingham Forest.

The current Tricky Trees boss was a popular figure amongst the Griffin Park squad, with players mentioning Williams of their own accord when discussing the Bees' turnaround in October.

And the 45-year-old, who spent a year in charge of USL Premier Development League expansion club Fredericksburg Gunners in 2006, believes it has helped him take his first step into managing an English team.

Speaking after his side's 3-1 win at Fulham, He said: “It helped a lot. You spend a lot of time talking about being good enough to coach or to be part of the Championship club.

“I'm grateful for the opportunity Brentford gave me. This is another learning curve for me. I hope to get better as a coach and understand more about myself. It's been a really good process for me.”

Williams picked up his first win in charge of Forest at the eighth attempt and believes he is starting to see a change in the squad there.

He added: “You find out a lot about yourself in getting the lads to play a different way. We're seeing the fruits of the labour. For me, it's been a really good experience.”
