Brentford let their standards slip in the first-half of today’s goalless draw at Oldham, according to manager Mark Warburton.

The Bees took a point from this afternoon’s clash with the Lactics but slipped six adrift of league leaders Wolves after their victory at MK Dons.

It follows a midweek defeat at Rotherham United and Warburton was particularly disappointed with the way his team started the game against Oldham.

“The performance in the first-half wasn’t good enough,” Warburton told Bees Player. “It was a better second-half but the first-half wasn’t good enough. The players know that, they will admit that and we all know we have to improve.

“The players know their standards and they weren’t there in the first-half. We upped the tempo in the second-half and played with more desire. Our decision-making was better but we have to be more brave.”

After the disappointment of more play-off heartache last season, Brentford are more determined than ever to get over the line this time.

Today’s point extended their lead over third-placed Leyton Orient, who were beaten by Bradford, and Warburton has told his boys not to blow their golden opportunity.

“I’ve told the players that they are victims of their own success in the sense that teams are sitting back against us now and making it very hard for us to break them down,” Warburton added. “We have to recognise that and be more clinical in the final third.

“They are all great football players and it’s their hard work and effort that have got them into this position. Now they have to maximise the opportunity and it’s there for them. They have earned the opportunity.”
