New manager Phil Granville is under no pressure to work miracles and match what Ray Duffy achieved at Hanwell Town.

Duffy guided the Geordies to their highest ever league position, seventh in Southern One Central, last season, before leaving the club over the summer.

Former Harefield United and Uxbridge reserve team manager Granville is the man tasked with picking up the pieces, and has already overseen a massive rebuilding programme.

Chairman Bob Fisher said: “We only have one player left from last season's squad. They were very good players and we don't pay anybody, so you can't blame them.

Hard act to follow: Ray Duffy

“The majority of the new squad has come over with Phil from Harefield, which is always a good sign for a manager, that players want to stay local to him and follow him.

“Phil is a lovely guy who ticked all the boxes for us. He's got very good references, but wanted to push on and manage at the next level.

“If he matched what Ray did he would have done very well. But we're in a difficult position, with an enormous switch in personnel, so a period of consolidation wouldn't be a bad thing.”

Hanwell have also struck a new two-year deal for tenants Southall to continue playing at Reynolds Fields, and the friendship between the two sides was cemented with Tuesday night's Geoff Harrison Shield game, which Southall won 2-0.

Another chance: North Greenford United manager Barry Morris

Meanwhile, Southern One Central rivals North Greenford United have stuck with Barry Morris in the hot seat, despite needing a reprieve to escape relegation.

Chairman Pat Hillier said: “Barry effectively kept us up as if we hadn't turned things around in the last few games of the season we'd have finished bottom and been relegated instead of AFC Hayes.

“We finished the season well and quite a few players have stayed. Survival will be our aim again, but for a club our size, that has been our aim since we came into the Southern League in 2010.

“We've done well to survive as long as we have at this level, and the holy grail would be to establish ourselves as a mid-table side.”
