The odds have been slashed on former Manchester United star Gary Neville becoming the next manager of Fulham.

Neville is yet to take his first management role since retiring from the game in 2011 after a glittering career that saw him claim eight Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns.

However, he has gained massive respect in the game for his work as a football pundit for Sky Sports and in 2012 was took up a coaching role for the England national team.

He works under former Fulham manager Roy Hodgson in the Three Lions setup.

The 40-year-old is an unlikely candidate to replace Kit Symons at Craven Cottage given his other commitments but the odds on that happening have dropped from 50-1 to 4-1 in a matter of hours.

Neville has been touted as a potential successor to Hodgson after the conclusion of this summer’s European Championships and the Cottagers favourite thinks his protégé has huge potential.

Hodgson said earlier this year: “He’d be a loss to England at the moment because he’s working with us. I don’t know what he’ll be doing in future terms.

“I think he’s a very good coach now. He’ll become an even better coach with experience. He’ll enjoy working with players.

“I think players will enjoy working with him. I think from a selfish coaching orientated point of view I would like to see him in coaching.

“Of course, were I in the mass media TV world I’d be having a completely different argument. I’d be saying: “He doesn’t want to be doing that.”

“He’s never actually said to me there is a cut-off point here where I’ll make a decision.

“But of course we talk a lot about what he wants to do because we talk a lot.

“We’re together all the time. I think he’s going to become a very fine coach.

“He’ll become a very fine manager also in time.”

Former Brentford manager Mark Warburton, currently employed at Rangers, remains the bookies’ favourite for the Fulham job with Dick Advocaat second on the list.
