Neal Ardley was at pains to keep a lid on the win at Wycombe which revitalised AFC Wimbledon’s play-off hopes.

Lyle Taylor’s double was enough to see off their fellow promotion chasers in what had seemed like the proverbial six-pointer before kick-off.

Not so said Ardley, whose side hit the woodwork twice and squandered a number of other chances, leaving their boss to feel they should have won more comfortably.

“We are delighted and it is a great win, but that is all it is, one win and now we must focus on another tough one at Plymouth next week,” he said.

“I thought we were so much better than them today. They have had one shot through legs and a couple of goalmouth scrambles through putting balls into the box constantly, but that was about it.

“We opened them up time and time again and probably should have been 3-0 up at half-time.

“So I was worried about the chances we missed because you think it should be three or four and when it isn’t you are one mistake away or one goalmouth scramble away from not getting what you should and that’s what happened in the end.

Rhys Murphy and Lyle Taylor of AFC Wimbledon celebrate

“But credit to the boys who came back at them well. The whole team has to get it right to come to somewhere like Wycombe and win a game and that is what they have done today.”

Taylor stole the headlines with a cool finish for the first goal after Tom Elliott was upended by home keeper Ryan Allsop, before slotting a second half penalty after Rhys Murphy was dragged down by Joe Jacobsen.

Ardley felt both incidents merited red cards for keeper and defender respectively, yet neither were even booked.

“In many ways we’d have rather had the penalty and the sending off than the first goal, because if you score the penalty they are down to 10 men,” he added.

“That’s what should have happened, but it didn’t. Then we have another penalty for the second goal and that is a sending off as well as he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

“But the referee doesn’t even talk to the boy and I find that really strange.”
