Neal Ardley came away from Cherry Road Records Stadium with confidence after AFC Wimbledon beat Newport County 2-0 with Adebayo Akinfenwa grabbing a brace.

The Dons have now gone two games unbeaten in League Two having previously gone three games without a win in all competitions.

The 32-year-old went on to score two more goals for the Dons taking his overall league tally to 11 in 28 league games this season.

But considering the striker netted a brace, he missed his chance to collect the match ball after failing to convert his penalty.

Boss Ardley stated: “Strikers don’t mean to miss goals and Adebayo gave a solid performance today and he always puts in a shift.

“Akinfenwa and Matt Tubbs are two that we signed and have been a part of 39 of our 40 goals we’ve scored this season, and when I say that I mean assisted or scored in, that is a huge achievement.”

Newport failed to test goalkeeper James Shea throughout the game as the goalkeeper was on the end of one of his quieter games in a Wimbledon shirt.

Double: Adebayo Akinfenwa

“We defended really well and when it comes to teams like Newport they really make it hard for you and throw bodies into the box but we defended resiliently, which is admirable for confidence and the rest of the team,” Ardley added.

Next up for The Wombles is an way trip against top of the table Burton Albion on Tuesday night, and having collected two wins out of a possible three, confidence is high in the camp.

“We have a really good squad and I’ve planned the week ahead and it is about sticking to that plan,” Ardley explained.

“In my opinion it is about points, not our league position. The target is 54 points and if we get past that then we’ll look ahead. There are a lot of qualities in the squad and we saw a lot of them today.

“But we have to remember we have a tough week ahead of us, but the boys are ready and we’ll see how we come out of it.”
