There will be no more incomings at AFC Wimbledon this season, according to boss Neal Ardley.

Darius Charles arrived on loan from Burton for the rest of the season last week as Ardley finally found the experienced centre-half he has been searching for since Karleigh Osbourne suffered his season-ending knee injury last month.

The defensive reinforcements came hot-on-the-heels of Oldham loanee Rhys Murphy blowing into Kingsmeadow to add firepower for the final promotion push.

Ardley confirmed the recruits have blown what remained of the playing budget, so business is concluded ahead of the closure of the loan window later this month.

“I’ve spent all the money,” he admitted, "so that’s it.

Loan Rangers: Rhys Murphy and Darius Charles

“We did not know how long Tom Elliott was going to be out a few weeks back and Adebayo Akinfenwa was suspended so we thought we could do with another striker of a different type.

“Rhys was someone we have followed for a long time and he became available so we went for it.

“Then you know how hard we have worked on getting a centre-half. Darius was not ready three weeks ago. We’d looked at others but kept him in the back of our mind and we have managed to get him. I think the pair of them can be massive for us.”

Ardley confirmed Charles’ arrival had been delayed to make sure he had recovered from injuries which have kept him out of action since February 2015.

His first League appearance in more than a year inevitably showed a few signs of ring rust, but also enough to suggest the ability which has seen him make almost 200 appearances for Stevenage and the Bees.

Ardley had already seen enough in his first training session to know the only way is up as far as Charles is concerned.

“Darius is only going to get better,” he added. “He is in there with cramp and all sorts, but he is only going to get better. We knew the first two or three games he was going to have to get rustiness out, but he’s a good player.”

“The first day he came in training he got up, won his first header going through two people to get it. I looked around at the rest of the lads and they thought I’m having him.”
