Alan Devonshire admitted money talked loudest in player-of-the-year Elliott Godfrey's defection from Hampton & Richmond Borough to AFC Wimbledon.

The talented midfielder-cum-striker last week followed Alan Inns from Beveree to Kingsmeadow after Devonshire could not match the terms being offered by their Blue Square South rivals.

But Devonshire reckons Canadian-born Godfrey's departure will allow others to shine.

He said: "I have had Elliott with me for some time, and he has been a really good and loyal member of the squad.

"I am disappointed to lose a player who could do well either up front or in behind the hole the strikers. But in the end, they made him an offer he could not refuse.

"However, it will provide a chance for the likes of Sean Macauley and Glenn Harris to stake their claim for a regular place. I have no doubts about either of them."

Dev signed Godfrey in 2004 after Watford released him, and he netted 54 goals in 186 games.

Meanwhile, after six months of solid organising, Hampton's supporters trust finally took control over former chairman Graham Wood's shareholding this week.

The share certificates were handed over for a nominal £1 at a special meal to thank Wood.

As a gesture of appreciation, the trust have made Wood, who is now chairman at Gateshead FC, an honourary life member. Wood retains a small shareholding in the club.

Trust chairman Larry Dann said: "Without Graham's generosity, the Trust would never have got off the ground.

"Now we must try and repay his faith by delivering an active and vibrant Trust which contributes to the community and promotes the club throughout it.

"We hope to work closely with the new club board at the same time as representing the views of ordinary fans."
