Mark Warburton has maintained his dialogue with Matthew Benham, even though the Brentford boss faces the axe.

The Bees owner is understood to want to restructure the club over the summer after growing frustrated over January's transfer activity, with Rayo Vallecano boss Paco Jemez the favourite to take charge .

Despite the uncertainty over his future, Warburton, who has insisted he will not quit , has been in contact with the owner.

He said: “I always speak to him. It's a tight club. It's a forward thinking club and communications are good. It's just dialogue. He was asking about the game, individuals. It was just normal dialogue.

“It happened. The club released a statement and it was important to get some clarity there. This squad of players do not deserve anything other than 100 per cent focus.”

Backing the boss: Brentford players jump on Mark Warburton after scoring against Watford.

A further statement from the club is expected ahead of Saturday's game with Charlton in an attempt to clarify the situation.

Warburton added: I think I have most of the detail. He's the owner of the club and it's his money and he's put the club where it is.

“It's important that it comes from Matthew and he cares about the club. His statement will give some clarity and we can talk from there.”

Brentford looked distracted in their 2-1 defeat to Watford on Tuesday night , although Warburton refuted those claims, and the manager insisted that the only focus is now on Saturday's trip across London.

The Bees boss explained: “Their focus was very much on the game. We knew Watford were very talented.

“If we go to 10 men against other teams we'd feel more comfortable. We were pegged back and still attacked when we could. We had chances. It's very disappointing they caught us at the death.

“If you allow yourself to get distracted then you have a problem. This squad of players are hard-working and have great character and quality.

“They're too good a group not to realise the position they are in and what they can achieve. They deserve to be where they are. There's no chance we're going to lose focus.”

The supporters have been shocked, angry and confused by these developments and Warburton hoped they were reassured by the commitment shown by the players on Tuesday night.

He said: “I hope the fans can never accuse anyone at the club of not acting in the best interests.

“For me, personally, the only focus is the team and that's never going to change. It's irrelevant compared to the team.

“I've been here over four years now but we're in too good a position to waste it. I hope the supporters were reassured from Tuesday night by the commitment.”
