Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is the one current England player who could have survived as part of Wimbledon’s old Crazy Gang.

That’s the view of Three Lions assistant and former Wombles loanee Ray Lewington ahead of Sunday’s European Championship qualifier with Slovenia.

Phoenix club AFC Wimbledon are now managed by former Crazy Gang member Neal Ardley and retain some of the same spirit of the side that became feared in the 1980s and 1990s.

The likes of Vinnie Jones and Wally Downes made the Dons a force to be reckoned with in those days and Lewington has seen enough of Rooney to suggest the former Everton man would have held his own.
