Seeing Joey Barton up to his old tricks was not the only reason QPR fans should have taken a keen interest in Lincoln City's FA Cup heroics yesterday.

Conference leaders Lincoln put out Premier League side Burnley, who included former Rs midfielder Barton in their side, to become the first non-league side of the modern era to reach the quarter-finals.

But who were the last non-league team to achieve such a feat? Non other than QPR themselves, who did it more than a century ago - six years before they were founder members of Division Three South.

Back in February 1914, when even the start of World War One was still five months off, the Southern League Rs travelled to the Midlands to take on Football League Division Two side Birmingham City in the third round, which was then the last 16.

Rangers, managed by former Scotland international striker James Howie, pulled off an upset to win 2-1 and book a place in the fourth round, which back then was the last eight.

There, the run came to an end when they went down 2-1 to eventual finalists Liverpool at Anfield. And the team who beat Liverpool in the final two months later? None other than Burnley!
