Lewis Macleod admitted he was nervous when Dean Smith asked him to come on against Fulham.

The Scot has been out of action for 13 months after an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against QPR, adding to his injury hit time at Brentford that meant his cameo was only his 15th appearance in just under three years.

And the midfielder was delighted to get on and was grateful for the reception he received as he made his long awaited return.

“There's always a wee bit (of nerves). It was good to hear my name and get out there. The reception from the fans was brilliant and I'm grateful for that,” he said.

“It's basically been three years but it was good to get that reception. The fans have been great. It's a long time out and the fans have been great throughout.”

Macleod played his part as Brentford wrapped up a 3-1 win over west London rivals Fulham and paid tribute to Romaine Sawyers' performance.

“It's good to be back but good to get three points after Monday night and the boys turned it around and did really well.

“I thought Romaine came on and was excellent. He changed the game with a goal and he's done really well.”

Macleod was clattered by Ryan Fredericks soon after coming on but got back up and he joked afterwards, saying: “That was my good leg if I've got one but I feel fine.”

Brentford are likely to treat Macleod gently, much like they did with Scott Hogan after his return by giving him minutes here and there while building him up to 90 minutes.

And Macleod is itching for more and is putting the hard yards in in training.

He explained: “I want to get more minutes. I'm working hard in training and, when I'm called upon, I'll be ready to go.”
