Brentford's latest acquisition Callum Elder made his debut at Millwall on Saturday and made it clear that expectations are high for both himself and the club this season.

Having spent last season on loan in League One with Peterborough United from parent club Leicester, the young full back said the chance to express himself in the Championship was a major factor in his decision to commit this year to Griffin Park.

He said: "The chance to express myself in the Championship and test myself was what sold me. A few Leicester boys have previously joined on loan and had nothing but good things to say about the club."

The Bees enjoyed a strong first season back in the Championship, making the play-offs in 2015.

Last season eventually saw the club finish ninth after a tumultuous winter period but with Dean Smith now settled in the dugout, Elder said the whole club are not content to simply make up the numbers and have their sights set on the upper echelons of the table.

He added: "One of the first things I've seen is that is definitely a driven bunch of lads. They want to achieve big things this season and that's in par with me - I can't wait to get going."

The Foxes youngster believes he has already settled into life at Griffin Park and believes he will be able to fit in with the style of play Smith wants.

Elder explained: "I've spoken to the gaffer a few times and said to me what he expects from me. It definitely fits in with what I want, I'm a full back and I love to attack so hopefully we can achieve success.

“I had my first training session yesterday and I couldn't tell there was other new boys in the group which tells you how welcoming the lads are and how well everyone gets on so I can't wait to get on the pitch Monday and get ready for Saturday.”
