Lee Carsley will have a meeting with new Brentford head coach Dean Smith later this week after he took charge of his last first-team game in the 1-1 draw at Bolton.

The Bees appointed the ex Walsall boss earlier in the day and he watched from the stands as John Swift's goal was cancelled out by Neil Danns.

Carsley will be leaving the club at the end of the year, but will be helping Smith settle in that time.

“I've not spoken to him yet. I'll be catching up with him and I think we'll be meeting him in Birmingham on Wednesday,” he said.

“I'll be helping him fit in. I'll be between the development squad and the first team. I'll be making sure he's got everything he needs.”

Going and staying: Lee Carsley will leave and Paul Williams will stay

Carsley is not sure what the future holds for him after he leaves the club but will still be working with England under-19s, although his assistant Paul Williams will remain with the club.

He added: “I'm not sure (what the future holds). I'm still doing the England under-19s with Aidy which I enjoy doing.

“There's no surprises in that respect. I'm not leaving for another job. I felt it would be difficult to go back to the development role.

“I'm content with it. I was afraid of a bit in being a manager. Myself and Paul have a good run of it.

“Paul will stay work with the first team and development squad. He's with the England under-16s at the minute. He was on Facetime with Kevin O'Connor and he was pointing it at the pitch.”

Carsley's character has changed from his first week in charge where he felt uncomfortable dealing with the situation at the club but the way he helped turn things around was satisfying for him.

He explained: “It's fair to say I didn't enjoy the first week after being beaten by Birmingham and Derby.

“The confidence had gone from the players. There was no belief and structure. They were unsure about their roles and responsibilities. As soon as we got that into them it helped.”

Message: Brentford fans

The head coach has made it clear that first team coaching isn't for him at this time but he believes it is something he'll be able to cope with in time.

He added: “First team management is something I'll consider in the future. It's definitely something where you wonder whether you could do it. I think I can do it and, at some point, I will go down that route.”

Brentford were made to rue their missed chances at the Macron Stadium with Jake Bidwell, Lasse Vibe among the players who missed chances.

Carsley revealed: “I thought we were excellent at times and had chances to win two or three games. Our attacking play, movement up front and desire was there but we couldn't take our chances but you get games like that.”

The final word, though was to the supporters and Carsley said: “Thanks for your support. When I'm on the side and you can feel the fans are behind the players (it's great).

“The support and passion they have. The idea is the players reflect the fans in the side and I think we've done that.”
