Although disappointed with his side's Capital One Cup exit to Fulham last night, Brentford boss Mark Warburton insists Championship points are more important.

Ross McCormack netted the only goal of the game in Brentford's first competitive meeting against their west London rivals in 16 years.

But Warburton would prefer to focus on some tough league games coming up, starting with Saturday's trip to Rotherham.

He said: “I wouldn’t swap our five points for a win tonight. The Championship is what we wanted to achieve last year and they deserve to be there, and they need to show the division that they deserve to be there.

“I don’t mean it in a bad way. It’s not underestimating the significance of tonight. I'm disappointed. And the players are disappointed as they’re very aware of how much the game means to the supporters.

“There were many positives from the first half but we didn’t test the keeper in the second half. We got into good areas in terms of possession and got into wide areas but we didn’t maximise it, and we need to improve that performance.

“It’s just taking care of the football all over the park. When we do that, we’re a good side. The difference here is you have to work harder to get it back. I wouldn’t say sloppy, but it’s taking care of the football.

“There are some very good players in there, and sometimes we lost patience, and we’re looking to deliver the ball into the box where there’s a 6ft 7ins centre half and a 6ft 5ins goalkeeper.”
